FIELD NOTE / BUYERS

A logo cannot rescue an unnamed buyer.

A sharp identity can make a clear proposition easier to recognise. It cannot make an unclear proposition easier to buy.

If the first buyer is described as “small businesses”, “creators” or “people who want to grow”, the visual system is not the constraint. The commercial definition is.

Broad audiences hide expensive decisions.

A buyer definition is not a demographic. It is a role, a situation and a reason to act. “Independent consultants” is a market. “An independent operations consultant who has delivered the same diagnostic three times and wants to sell it without rewriting every proposal” is a buying context.

The second version helps you choose language, proof, scope, price and a route to the first ten conversations. The first version asks the website to do all of that at once.

Use three constraints.

Role: who owns the consequence and can make a decision?

Trigger: what has changed now rather than six months ago?

Constraint: what makes the usual route too slow, risky or expensive?

A useful first-buyer sentence contains all three: “A technical specialist who keeps receiving the same advisory request, has no named offer and needs a credible way to sell it before reducing client work.”

Evidence beats flattering breadth.

Narrowing feels dangerous because it appears to reduce opportunity. In practice it reduces the number of assumptions inside each conversation. You hear objections that can be compared. You learn which words buyers already use. You can distinguish a weak message from a weak problem.

Do not ask whether people “like the idea”. Ask when the problem last occurred, what they did, who owned the decision and what inaction cost. Behaviour is more useful than encouragement.

A seven-day buyer test.

  1. Write one role–trigger–constraint sentence.
  2. List ten people or organisations that match it.
  3. Remove anyone included only because they are easy to contact.
  4. Ask five for a 20-minute problem conversation.
  5. Record repeated language, existing workarounds and the moment urgency appears.

If nobody recognises the context, change the definition before commissioning more brand or product work.
